Shelter, 2023

Förterer, Holger
"Shelter" (2023) von Holger Förterer

With the interactive work Shelter, media artist Holger Förterer represents a resting point on the way away from a former home, on the run from people or circumstances that threaten one’s own life and possibly also the lives of friends and relatives.

In the center of the room is a spherical mirror, protected from contact, which reflects the light of a projector into the entire room. The reflected light from the mirror casts moving plants of a thicket on the walls and ceiling. Thus, upon entering the installation, one finds oneself in an unknown hiding place in the woods. While the plants suggest shelter, the sounds of the space tell another side of the story. Sounds of the environment and wind blowing through the trees create a situation that is in limbo and where one cannot be sure that everything is okay. The visitors can interact with the plants. The more they move, the louder and more eerie the external soundscape becomes.
