Overlapping Studio’s Particles Ensemble, the first work to win the dm award connecting worlds, is a ground-breaking project that blurs the boundaries between digital art and physical space in an innovative way. This interactive media installation draws the audience in with fascinating soundscapes and projects their movements into abstract visuals in real time on the imposing Palace façade using infrared sensors. The intensity of the visuals responds to the audience’s activity: the more people dance and interact with the artwork, the more vibrant and dynamic become the particles on the façade.

Particles Ensemble also connects spaces by extending beyond the Karlsruhe Palace, tracing a path from there to the heart of the city through two strategically placed interactive Totems. The two digital stations, placed at the ZKM I Karlsruhe and the Tourist‐Information Karlsruhe, are connected via a peer‐to‐peer system, enabling users to interact, play and communicate with each other.

As the winner of the dm award, Particles Ensemble stands out not only for its artistic excellence, but also for its unique ability to transport visitors into a dynamic fusion of digital and analogue spaces. Both the main projection and the satellite Totems work to produce an immersive, day‐and‐night experience where the audience actively shapes the artwork, connecting the social and urban fabric of Karlsruhe and beyond.
