The storing of people’s silhouettes, which can be materialized as digital traces, stands symbolically for the capabilities of modern surveillance technologies. The shadow is part of any person although it is not part of the body. It is an intrinsic part of a person — and yet it can still be taken away from them.

The light from a projector throws the shadows of each person onto the facade of the Weinbrennerhaus on Karlsruhe’s Marktplatz. If you stand still for a few seconds, your shadow freezes; when you move again, your frozen shadow stays on the wall for a while. A short time later, the projection will change in unexpected ways or the shadows of other people on the square will be superimposed on it.
