Founded in 1854, the Academy of Fine Arts, then still called the Großherzoglich Badische Kunstschule Karlsruhe, achieved great fame thanks to renowned teachers such as Karl Friedrich Lessing, Hans Thoma and Erich Heckel. It was also a centre of New Objectivity through Rudolf Dischinger, August Babberger, Karl Hubbuch, Georg Scholz and Wilhelm Schnarrenberger.
Known under its final name, the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe (Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe), since 1961, it is now home to around 300 students, who are not only enrolled in the Fine Arts degree programme, but are also taught together with students following a teacher training course in Art Teaching.
In addition to training young artists and future teachers, it is also an essential part of Karlsruhe’s cultural landscape. Student work shows and other cultural events regularly attract visitors to the premises in Reinhold-Frank-Straße.
