“… und mir ist, als öffnet ein verwandter Geist mir die Arme…” (“…and I feel as if a kindred spirit is opening its arms to me…”. Friedrich Hölderlin, Hyperion, 1792-1792). Reflecting this quote, the Kunstverein Wilhelmshöhe Ettlingen is presenting a double exhibition by the painter Tenki Hiramatsu and the sculptor Peco Kawashima.

Tenki Hiramatsu, winner of the Werner Stober Foundation Art Prize 2022, blurs the boundaries between tragedy and comedy in his works. He creates a visionary world in which people, animals and mythical creatures are immersed in the nature of light and darkness. He creates fragmented “creatures” who only materialize during the painting process. In the process, the figures develop a kind life on their own, which at first glance give a hint of the familiar, but in the stillness of looking at them, they elude all categorization and blur into an enigmatic narrative.

The paintings by Tenki Hiramatsu are complemented by the installations by Peco Kawashima. The winner of the 2020 Hanna-Nagel-Prize focuses on human existence and time in her artistic work. The artist, who has mastered the artful techniques of wood turning, metalworking and papermaking, is able to generate a powerful haptic quality in her artworks that reflects her skills as an accomplished craftswoman with a range of skills. Her exhibited works can be located between a you and I, between volumes and time and their harmony.

The exhibition will open with a vernissage on January 12 at 7 p.m., before opening to the public on Saturday, January 13.
