In September the Kronenplatz in Karlsruhe will become a meeting place for all those who want to engage with the topics of democracy and freedom. The Days of Democracy are a week-long programme of discussions, encounters and activities that focus on current social issues and the importance of democratic values. Under the motto ‘Freedom’, the programme offers numerous opportunities to engage with different perspectives and to reflect together on the future of democracy.
One of this year’s special highlights is the video installation Phasing Synergies by Francis Karat, which takes the audience on an artistic exploration into the digital age. Inspired by research into neural networks, the installation explores the principles of democracy and their interactions in an increasingly technologised world. With visual effects and a technoid soundtrack, it invites us to reflect on the relationship between people, society and technology. The video installation can be seen until Thursday September 19 – from Sunday to Thursday from 9:45 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 10:15 p.m.
The debate on the challenges of our time will also take place in other parts of the programme. For example, the event week will open with a lecture by Prof Darius Schindler, who will examine the role of economic sanctions as a peaceful alternative to military measures. The possibilities and limits of such approaches will be addressed and the importance of civil society instruments for the preservation of democratic values will be discussed.
The EFFEKTE event False and Manipulated on September 17 will also take up the topic of freedom and examine how disinformation and manipulation in social media influence our society. The event offers the opportunity to learn about the mechanisms of fake news and to discuss protection strategies in order to be better prepared for the challenges in the digital space.
On September 18, the OPEN HOUSE on Kronenplatz invites you to exchange ideas and network in a relaxed atmosphere. In open discussions and workshops, visitors can contribute their ideas on the future of democracy and work together on solutions for the digital society.
