The International Day against Racism is celebrated annually on 21 March and was proclaimed by the UN in 1966. In recent years, International Weeks against Racism have also taken place in Karlsruhe on the occasion of this day. More than 40 associations, initiatives and organisations as well as individuals from all sectors of Karlsruhe society are taking part. The city administration is also contributing once again.
The common purpose is to draw more attention to the work against racism. The topic of racism demands to be permanently on the agenda of the city society, so that people are aware and mobilised against racism. These weeks are a contribution to achieving this goal.
The central event will take place this year on March 21 at the cultural center Tollhaus. It is hosted jointly by the City of Karlsruhe, the Cultural Office and Office for Integration, and Shimana – Steh auf e.V.. The panel discussion will focus on the question of what binding goals and concrete measures Karlsruhe needs to confront racism in all facets of society.
Participating in the panel discussion will be Mayor Dr. Albert Käuflein, Police Commissioner Caren Denner, Tahir Della from the initiative “Black Germans” and “Afro-Census”, Sylvia Holzhäuser-Ruprecht for the local perspective of People of Color and Meri Uhlig, Integration Officer of the City of Karlsruhe. Hakim Ludin, a percussionist from Karlsruhe, will provide the musical accompaniment. Dr. Pierette Herzberger-Fofana, member of the European Parliament, will send a video statement. She was a Black city councilor, activist and teacher in Erlangen for many years before being elected to the European Parliament for the Green Party.
After the official event, there will be an opportunity to spend some time and meet each other in the Tollhaus foyer. The International Youth and Culture Association Karlsruhe will offer a benefit buffet in aid of the earthquake victims in Turkey and northern Syria. The musician duo Murat Yalcin and Funda Banaz from Mannheim will contribute befitting music.
