A fascinating window into the world of documentary films and audio documentaries opens in Karlsruhe. Artists and filmmakers tackle current social issues and offer a constructive counterpoint to fake news – the diverse programme offers insights into the most pressing topics of our time.

From May 8 to 12, the 11th edition of dokKa will present 20 works at the Kinemathek and Schauburg Karlsruhe. The selection committee has put together a varied programme that offers insights into the many themes of the last two years.

The opening film The Empty Grave on May 8, at 7 pm, sheds light on the traces and traumas of German colonial rule in Tanzanian families to this day and tells of their struggle for enlightenment and self-determination. The film takes a critical look at a chapter of German history that has hardly been illuminated to date and advocates coming to terms with German colonial crimes. Other highlights include the futuristic film Ceci n’est pas une guerre and the captivating audio documentary Herz über Kreuz.

In addition to the film screenings, dokKa also offers an interactive experience with a sound walk through Karlsruhe city centre and an online programme for those who cannot attend personally. Discussions over breakfast, the dokKa research grant and the open meeting for filmmakers round off the programme.

Finally, on May 12, the festival awards will be presented, including the dokKa Festival Prize and the award for the best audio piece. The festival traditionally ends with a screening of the winning film at the Karlsruhe Kinemathek.
