International call for media art projects

2. May 2024

UNESCO City of Media Arts Karlsruhe announces the project funding program also for international applicants for the first time

The UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts Karlsruhe is excited to announce the launch of the open call for the 2024 project funding program. The international call aims to promote collaborative, interdisciplinary and outdoor media arts projects and to support international networking activities in the field of media arts.

The program is looking for projects that deal with current social, cultural and artistic issues, use innovative technologies and media forms and pursue interdisciplinary approaches. The projects should also focus on co-operation and synergies with existing institutions and projects and strengthen international networks within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of media art. Funding is available for projects that are developed for outdoor spaces and create a high level of visibility for the public.

This year, for the first time, the open call, which is now taking place for the fifth time, is also aimed at applicants who do not live or work in Karlsruhe. Artists, cultural and media professionals from all over the world are invited to take part, especially from the cities of the UNESCO Media Arts Cluster, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, cultural, ethnic and social background.

Head of the Department of Cultural Affairs Dominika Szope is looking forward to the submissions: “Our annual project funding program is of central importance in reflecting and promoting the uniqueness and innovative spirit of media art in Karlsruhe. These funded projects also serve to strengthen international networks and intensify the dialogue between diverse cultural and artistic perspectives. We are eagerly awaiting the multitude of pioneering ideas generated by this call and look forward to opening up new cultural horizons in media art together with the artists.”

The city of Karlsruhe is actively promoting media art projects and has made funds totalling 100,000 euros available for this purpose in the 2024 budget. The individual funding can amount to up to 40,000 euros per project and the selected proposals will be presented to the public in summer 2025 as part of the “Media art is here” exhibition parallel to the Schlosslichtspiele in Karlsruhe. The application deadline is September 20, 2024.

An expert jury consisting of representatives from the arts, cultural and creative industries will select the eligible projects. Applicants will be informed of the outcome at the end of October 2024.

In 2019, Karlsruhe was the first and so far only city in Germany to be awarded the title “Creative City of Media Arts” by UNESCO and was included in the international UNESCO Creative Cities Network. In this context, a network of over 40 organisations from the arts, culture, science, creative industries, the digital scene, municipal companies and departments in Karlsruhe have committed to building a sustainable urban society with a special focus on creativity and culture.
