Media Art Connects Science and Culture: Installation by Ingrid Cuestas at the International Sustainability Transitions Conference (IST)
For the first time the Cultural Affairs Department of the City of Karlsruhe and the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) have collaborated on a cultural project situated at the interface between art and science. A prize was offered for a new, digital media artwork on the theme of “Visions of Transformations to Sustainability.” From the 15 international applications received, a jury of experts selected the project EARTH WE ARE by Ingrid Cuestas. The work will be presented for the first time at the International Sustainability Transitions (IST) conference in Karlsruhe on October 7, 2021.
EARTH WE ARE addresses the importance of food sovereignty for a healthy society that lives in harmony with nature, and critically reflects on the uncontrolled consumption of resources and massive use of plastic, our ecological footprint, and their consequences for sustaining life on our planet. The work was selected by the jury of experts “because it addresses the transformative idea of change to a sustainable society in a multimedia and interactive way.” The prize money will allow Ingrid Cuestas to develop the work as a multidisciplinary installation.
The Colombian-born artist graduated from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, in 2009 with a degree in Fine Arts with a special focus on audiovisual expression. In 2011 she inaugurated the project “Sol de Noite: Creative Cooking Itinerant Laboratory,” for which she spent nine years traveling around South America and working on the concept of “edible art.” Ingrid Cuestas lives and works in Paraty, the Brazilian UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
EARTH WE ARE will be explained and presented in virtual form as a project at the IST International Sustainability Conference on October 7, 2021. The artist will be present. Subsequently, it is planned to exhibit the work at various locations, for example, at the Fraunhofer Forum in Berlin (December 2021) as part of the exhibition Focus on Design in Fraunhofer Research of the Fraunhofer Network of Science, Art, and Design.
The IST Conference will take place from October 5 to 8, 2021, under the auspices of Fraunhofer ISI in the UNESCO City of Media Arts Karlsruhe. This annual event of the Sustainability Transitions Research Network (STRN), the largest international network on sustainability transformation research, is one of the most important meetings of researchers from various disciplines and focuses on the question of how a transition to sustainability can succeed through coevolutionary change and innovations in social and technical systems.
