Das Forschungssymposium der Staatlichen Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) und des ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe untersucht, wie sich die Beziehungen zwischen Kunst, Theorie und Gestaltung neu definieren lassen. Die HfG und das ZKM, in den 1990er Jahren von Heinrich Klotz als Forschungszentren für Neue Medien gegründet, vereinen Hochschule und Kulturinstitution und bieten somit ideale Voraussetzungen zur Vernetzung künstlerischer und wissenschaftlicher Ansätze. Dafür sind jedoch neue Rahmenbedingungen notwendig.
Ein geplantes postgraduales Programm soll interdisziplinäre Expertise bündeln, um die Gründungsidee der HfG und des ZKM weiterzuführen. Dabei wird auf aktuelle Paradigmenwechsel reagiert, die sich sowohl in Legitimationskrisen als auch in neuen, kreativen Formen der Wissensproduktion zeigen. Die HfG Karlsruhe nimmt dies als Anlass, hybride Forschungsformate zu entwickeln und die Funktion wissenschaftlicher Promotionen im Kunstbereich zu hinterfragen.
