On Thursday, September 19, the exhibitions Vonna-Michell’s House and WOMAN IN THE YEAR 2000 will open at the Badischer Kunstverein.
A comprehensive solo exhibition by the artist Tris Vonna-Michell will be shown on the upper floor. Vonna-Michell’s House presents new, existing and reconfigured works from the artist’s two decades of activity. Vonna-Michell has long employed analogue and digital technology alongside new approaches to installation that encompasses performance, sound poetry, printed matter, sculpture, photography and film. In addition, for the first time in a public institution, Tris’ father Ed Vonna-Michell’s (1950–2020) photographic and publishing projects from the late 1960s onwards will be shown alongside and integrated with Tris’ recent works.
The extensive archive that is stored at the VALIE EXPORT Center in Linz is the point of departure and material source for the project WOMAN IN THE YEAR 2000, and is closely linked structurally to the exhibition in the upper floor. Both exhibitions revolve around the diverse possibilities for surveying artistic archives, whose variability, multiperspectivity and atemporality serve as a stimulus to approaches that are as radical as they are experimental. In this spirit, the exhibition understands the VALIE EXPORT archive as an exemplary body of work which it approaches from a feminist perspective in order to explore the ways in which female artists have particularly influenced the herstory of media art.
